Law enforcement in Sacramento are probing a gun violence incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Community Park just as law enforcement were dissolving an unlawful assembly of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Deputies first arrived at the park on Howe Avenue at approximately 6:30 Saturday evening after Sacramento County Sheriff shooting investigation receiving reports of people potentially armed with concealed firearms. Shortly after, a follow-up call was made regarding a possible physical fight breaking out inside the park.
A sheriff's airship searched from above but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, it was evident that an enormous crowd had packed into the park in an unauthorized manner.
The Moment Gunfire Erupted
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies set about removing people from the park by encircling the gathering and making announcements directing attendees to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were allotted for individuals to vacate.
As the crowd was being cleared that an estimated 20 to 25 shots cut through the air. The sudden gunfire caused mass panic. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies immediately began identifying shooting victims.
The Shooting Victims
Ultimately, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — comprising three men and one woman all reportedly in their twenties — were transported to area medical facilities. Medical personnel indicated that two had critical injury classifications, one had moderate injuries, and one had injuries classified as minor. Thankfully, all four were in stable condition.
Sacramento fire crews also responded and aided in treating shooting victims at the scene.
What Investigators Found
The center of the incident was confirmed to have unfolded near Cottage Way adjacent to the local Home Depot on the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Detectives recovered additional shell casings on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were noted in the metal fencing bordering the nearby Home Depot. The physical evidence showed that one of the gunmen had been sending rounds south from along Cottage Way toward the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was secured under a brief lockdown while the scene was active. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives continued working for hours.
Arrests Made
Details gathered via scanner audio showed that a Kia had been stopped in an area within Solano County. Four individuals were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were en route to collect those detained to pick up those detained for further questioning. Video that was reviewed showed that two separate shooters participated in the incident.
